Work Packages

The Workplan structure is described in the diagram below. It’s divided into
8 WPs covering all the ADMIRABLE activities spectrum from generating knowledge to Design.
WP1 and WP4 are related to Studies activities. WP2 is dedicated to Generating knowledge.
WP3 & WP8 are Integrating Knowledge activities. WP5 to WP7 will Design the different
layers functionalities

In response to this challenge, the ADMIRABLE project offers significant advantages over existing materials and manufacturing processes used in defense structures. The ability to produce complex, lightweight, and armored structures quickly, cost-effectively, and with customization capabilities represents a major leap forward for the naval defense sector.

ADMIRABLE aims to replace or complement traditional materials with advanced composite solutions that are inherently resistant to fire, corrosion, and ballistic threats—while also reducing weight and enhancing stealth capabilities.

The solution envisioned by the ADMIRABLE project is not only focused on developing a material that meets all technical and operational requirements. It also aims to identify the most effective manufacturing process—one that minimizes costs, is compatible with the studied materials, and achieves the optimal balance between cost and efficiency.

This dual focus on material performance and process optimization is key to ensuring that the final solution is both technically superior and economically viable for large-scale adoption in the naval defense sector.

Work packages description

Work package 1 – Project Management

Under this work package, the core objective is to organize the activities towards the completion of the project, its goals and objectives, as well as to ensure a smooth cooperation between the partners. This includes carrying out ADMIRABLE’s general administration, developing management strategies, performing risk and quality management activities, qualifying ethics principles through the completion of project’s deliverables, notably considering the preservation of the environment. Finally, communication and dissemination activities are essential activities of this work package.

Work package 2 – Stakeholders’ needs identification and requirements definition

To define the project’s framework, it is essential to identify the needs of the project’s stakeholders, specifically the end users of the product. This work package will also include an analysis of the current regulatory framework, which entails the regulations imposed by Classification Societies on these materials. Additionally, it is necessary to examine the state-of-the-art materials, solutions, and manufacturing processes currently utilized in the naval industry. The most critical aspect of this work package will be the definition of the requirements and Key Performance Indicators, which will serve as the foundation for the in-depth analysis of the material.

Work package 3 – Material Solution & Supply Chain

The WP3 will be in charge to analyse the WP2 requirements & collect raw material data to perform the “ADMIRABLE” composite. The focus will be put in the availability of the different available non-critical EU raw material & easiness of its extraction, manufacturability & processing as also the current & potential scaling-up of the existent supply chain.

Work package 4 – Fire resistance requirements study and solution identification under integrated requirements

This work package involves identifying materials that meet fire and environmental resistance requirements and adhere to circular economy principles based on comparable known use cases. This entails a comprehensive review of all relevant material options in conjunction with applicable advanced manufacturing processes, an evaluation of these material and process options, and the reduction of material and process combinations to the technical solutions to be examined in detail in subsequent project stages.

Work package 5 – Low observability & Electromagnetic analysis, design and testing

This work package will focus on developing the new material designed for low observability (LO). The investigation will evaluate various multistructure designs, addressing challenges in electromagnetic design, materials, and manufacturing methods. Additionally, it will assess and enhance electromagnetic properties, including transparency requirements, resistance to electromagnetic pulses, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Work package 6 – Structural / lightweight & Ballistic material analysis, design and testing

This work package encompasses the design and development of composite metamaterial structures, including various models and combinations. It involves the numerical and digital validation and optimization of these structures, along with the creation of digital twins for further analysis and design refinement. Additionally, it covers the development of manufacturing processes and the production of laboratory-scale demonstrators for functional testing. The final validation will be conducted through functional ballistics tests to ensure compliance with the requirements.

Work package 7 – Thermal and fire resistant material analysis, design and testing

This work package will focus on developing a new design for fire-resistant composite structures. It includes creating a thermo-mechanical simulation model, advancing manufacturing processes, and conducting functional tests.

Work package 8 – Combined material, specimen design advanced manufacturing study & evaluation

This work package focuses on identifying the best bonding methodologies for ensuring strong bonds in AM lightweight structural materials. It involves defining manufacturing processes compatible with low observability metamaterials and lightweight structural materials, which also possess high-performance blast, ballistic, electromagnetic, thermal, and fire-resistant properties. All this process will be verified through specialized tests, research, and simulations.
